Journey Of Hope

Fourteen-month-old Qudrat Wardak with his father Hakim traveled more than 7,000 miles from his home in Kabul, Afghanistan to Indianapolis where strangers will operate on his heart and try to save his life. "He has a very complicated congenital heart defect and he will die if we don't tackle this very risky surgery," said Cardiovascular Surgeon Dr. Mark Turrentine. After being diagnosed with four holes in his heart and the ventricles reversed Qudrat's golf ball sized heart will prove to be a challenge unlike anything the doctors at Riley Hospital for Children have ever attempted. This condition has slowed the baby's growth and development. At 14 months, he still cannot walk or crawl, and at 26 inches, he weighs less than 13 pounds. With very limited medical resources available in Afghanistan, Qudrat now begins a four-month lifesaving "Journey of Hope."
