Last Days of Fame - Home

In defiance of the lung cancer that often leaves him short of breath, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown sits on the back porch of his home and lights a pipe. At the time of his diagnosis, Brown refused to consider farewells. He never doubted he would continue to perform and record. "Damn right I'm going to make another record, several records," he said. He has slowed down, and his world has gotten smaller, but Brown does not relinquish it easily.

In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina took aim on the New Orleans metropolitan area, including Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's hometown of Slidell. Friends and family of the legendary musician evacuated him to the home of a grand-niece in Orange, Tex., the town where he grew up. Katrina's winds destroyed his Slidell home and his beloved mementos of a career that spanned decades of music history. More than a week later, after undergoing an angioplasty in Texas and receiving doctors' instructions to remain in the hospital, he insisted on returning to his niece's apartment. He died two weeks after Katrina at age 81. Close friends said he continued to hold stubbornly to his own terms, dying as he lived, deciding for himself when it was time to go.
