The disregard for loss of life and general unpreparedness defined the best work of this category.
The honorable mention pictures from Katrina, Rita, the Indonesian tsunami and the Pakistani earthquake were strong moments, but lacking the human pathos to rise to first, second or third place winners.
A nice look at the primitive environment and some of the challenges facing the people of Kashmir as they receive medical attention. The reader can immediately understand the obstacles facing the victims.
An different way of treating the aftermath of the earthquake that powerfully illustrates the conditions under which the survivors were treated.
