A photograph of President Bush with his mouth covered is tacked on a door along with other press clippings as Democratic presidential hopeful Wesley Clark has his hair trimmed by Michele Cook at her salon in Portsmouth, N.H. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004. Clark, former NATO Supreme Allied Commander, threw his hat into the crowded Democratic presidential race in September 2003. Considered a late entry, the retired telegenic general drew interest as a strong challenger to President Bush, with his military record and foreign policy experience. Ultimately, missteps blamed on his political inexperience and the unstoppable momentum of John Kerry, Clark dropped out of the race after failing to win enough delegates to remain in the contest.
