Gulu, Uganda. May 10, 2004. Gusco shelter. 13 year old, Alex Atoo. "I was kidnapped from my village, Aryek, at 4 am in April 2003. They tied me together with another 30 children from my village. We were tied at the waist so that our hands were free to carry all that was stolen from our village. I was with the rebels for 13 months, until yesterday, when I was able to escape. During this time, I was used as a slave for carrying the goods that were stolen from the villages. Once the rebels almost killed me, because I was not able to kill my brother. He tried to escape, that was his crime. The rebels captured him, brought him before us, tied him to the ground and ordered me to club him to death - aiming at his head. Other children from the group finished the job and killed him and I started to cry and scream. So they started to club me too. They didn't kill me - only because we were forced to escape an attack by the Government Army".
