Northern Uganda - A war that targets children in Northern Uganda - The 18 year conflict has made refugees out of 1.6 million Ugandans that have been forced to leave their land and move to camps close to towns where the presence of Ugandan armed forces offer some protection. Staying on their land is not an option that the Ugandan authorities allow. The Lord's Resistance Army has been kidnapping and using children as fighters, killers, porters and sex slaves for years. An estimated 20,000 children have been kidnapped for these purposes. When children have been rescued or escaped they usually bear physical and psychological wounds. For fear of abduction and the ensuing brutalities that often end in death, village children have taken to trekking into towns every night and sleeping on the streets or in shelters set up by NGOs. When the Ugandan government launched operation Iron Fist to destroy the LRA in 2002, they responded by stepping up their attacks on children and IDPs.
